JENNA: (Ignoring Mitsy:) What you doing up here?

CLEVE: Wanted to see what everybody's talking 'bout.

JENNA: Talking 'bout?

CLEVE: The amazing diving girl.

(Frustrated, Mitsy takes a seat. She listens from a distance and throws pebbles from the bridge.)

JENNA: Like in a carnival or something?

CLEVE: No. No. Nothing like that. (Beat.) I wanted to see you dive.

JENNA: Sorry. I already done my last dive for tonight.

CLEVE: Now you got an audience. You got to give an encore.

JENNA: When I done, I'm done.

CLEVE: No exceptions?

JENNA: Nope.

(Cleve picks up Mitsy's mason jar.)

CLEVE: What's this for?

JENNA: It's my sister's.

CLEVE: (Beat.) Look. I've been wantin' to talk to you.

JENNA: (Beat.) Why?

CLEVE: I just wanna say thanks.

JENNA: For what?

CLEVE: Just for being nice and all. After the...after...lot of people stopped talking to me.

JENNA: They did?

CLEVE: Well, yeah. I mean...they got over it and all. But you...that day after the...you wrote me that note. It was real sweet.

JENNA: It's nothing.

CLEVE: It was...it meant something. (Beat.) Hey. There's something I want to ask you 'bout.

JENNA: Yeah?

CLEVE: Jolene came out to the race the other night.

JENNA: Race?

CLEVE: She was cheering for me. Then she stopped by the store today. Didn't even buy nothing. So I started wondering if she, you know—

JENNA: I know?

CLEVE: Yeah. You're friends with Jolene, right?

JENNA: Well...

CLEVE: You're always together.

JENNA: Not really.

CLEVE: But you're friends?

JENNA: Cousins.

CLEVE: Even better.

JENNA: It is?

CLEVE: The reason I came up here is to see if you could put in a good word for me.

JENNA: What do you mean?

CLEVE: You know. Ask her what she thinks of me.

JENNA: Why don't you just ask her yourself?

CLEVE: I'm gonna ask her out. I just wanna to know if I got a chance first.

JENNA: I wouldn't know 'bout that.

CLEVE: She's your cousin.

JENNA: But we don't talk 'bout things.

CLEVE: Things?

JENNA: Guys.

CLEVE: For real?

JENNA: I just see her around. Just like everybody else.

CLEVE: Guess you can't miss her.

JENNA: Guess not.

CLEVE: I mean everybody thinks she's pretty. I wouldn't ask her out if they didn't.

JENNA: 'Course.

CLEVE: I'd appreciate it if you'd—

JENNA: Somebody else would be better.

CLEVE: Please?

JENNA: I just—

CLEVE: Please?

JENNA: It's just that—

CLEVE: You know her better than anyone else I know.

JENNA: I got it covered.

CLEVE: Thanks. I owe you.

(Cleve exits.)
