We welcome submissions of unpublished plays and musicals that are appropriate for young actors/audiences. While we will accept unproduced material, we prefer plays that have had the opportunity to be refined through the production process. Please read our guidelines carefully, and we strongly recommend that you browse our website to learn more about us before submitting.
Current YouthPLAYS Authors Only
Please email the complete script as a single PDF (strongly preferred), Final Draft or Word attachment (.doc preferred over .docx) to info@youthplays.com with the subject line "Play Submission." Dramatists Guild of America Modern or Traditional formats preferred. Be sure there is a title page and a page with a cast list. Feel free to submit multiple scripts, as long as you use a different email for each.
New Authors
If you are not currently represented by YouthPLAYS, we ask that you email ONE SCRIPT ONLY (which should contain a title page and cast of characters list) as a single attachment with the subject line "Play Submission." Please use a standard professional playwriting format (Dramatists Guild Modern or Traditional formats preferred) for your attached play and include all of the following in the body of the email (in other words, NOT as an attachment!):
- Short synopsis.
- Cast breakdown (male/female/either, plus any notes about casting flexibility).
- Running time.
- Your thoughts about the age group for which it's most suitable (e.g. middle school actors and audiences, high school or older actors performing for elementary age students, etc).
- The play's production and development history, if any.
- A short bio.
Submissions must include all of the above elements to be considered. We strongly prefer PDF submissions but will also accept files in Final Draft or Word (we prefer .doc files to .docx). Please don't submit additional scripts until we've had an opportunity to consider your original submission.
Types of Material
- One-act or full-length plays and musicals for young actors (teens or younger). We particularly need one-act (and full-length) comedies for high school and middle school performers with large or flexible casts and lots of female roles, as well as mysteries and/or murder mysteries for that age group. At least a substantial portion of the lead roles should be age-appropriate.
- One-act or full-length plays and musicals in which adult actors or mixed-age casts perform for young audiences (TYA). It is important that the protagonist and preferably other important roles be young characters, even if they are played by older actors.
- Short monologues (6-8 minutes) and duets (8-10 minutes) with teen characters, particularly comedies.
- Adaptations of well-known titles (but please check our site to make sure we don't already have your chosen title). In the case of adaptations, please be sure you have all the appropriate permissions (i.e. a written agreement with the underlying rights holder, if the material is not in the public domain) in place before contacting us.
- At this time, while we will accept fairy tale take-offs (e.g. "fractured fairy tales"), we publish several already and are not particularly looking for material in this genre unless it is substantially different from our current scripts.
- We only represent material for which we can be the exclusive licensing agent.
Other Important Details
Response time is roughly 3-6 months.
If at any point after you have submitted a script your material becomes unavailable (e.g. because you accept another publication offer), please notify us immediately, so that we can devote our resources to material that is still available to us. If you receive another offer, we are also happy to expedite consideration of your play so that you may potentially consider both offers.
YouthPLAYS is committed to representing a diverse community of writers and welcomes submissions from all authors pursuant to our guidelines.
